Eventually I'll run out of song titles from REM's catalog, but for now the headlines seem to write themselves, and the hits just keep on coming...
The outcome of last night's Orange Bowl wasn't all that surprizing, but the final score was rather stunning, as Southern Cal crushed the previously unbeaten Oklahoma Sooners 55-19 to claim college football's national championship. It wasn't unanimous, though, as three lunkheads cast their AP votes for Auburn. Perhaps Larry, Moe, and Curly were busy watching home movies on Tuesday night...
How bad was the beating? One of ABC's sideline cameras caught Oklahoma All-American defensive end Dan Cody in a candid moment during the game's final moments. This was a man who knew he had been dominated. With an "aw shucks" grin which in another setting might've been used to cover the embarrassment of letting a big ol' catfish jump out of the boat and back into the water hole, Cody said, "I just can't wait to get on that red eye to Oklahoma," and red eye was pronounced "red ahh." You half expected to see him turn around and run after his pa while whistling the theme to the Andy Griffith Show.
The scary thing about these Trojans is that as good as they are (and just imagine if Mike Williams had been allowed to play this season) they just seem to be getting better. Pete Carrol is the happiest man in America and should be guiding the ship for years to come, Norm Chow seems ready to return for another year (and by the way, what in god's name was Stanford thinking about when they turned him down? Walt Harris? Sounds like a commitment to mediocrity, if you ask me...), the offensive line is as young as they are good, the running tandem of LenDale White and Reggie Bush will be back, and Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart hasn't ruled out a return. (And even if Leinart does take his game to the NFL, their are blue chippers waiting in the wings to replace him, just like there is at every position at USC.)
Looking at their schedules for 2005 and 2006, it wouldn't surprize me to see their current twenty-two game winning streak climb towards forty. Now wouldn't that be fun? Pity the Pac-10, pity the Sooners, but hail the Trojans.
